Community Art Project: “Playthings” 2012
Event Date:  Saturday, May 5th
Event Time:  7 to 10
Event Location:  1505 W. Chicago Ave.

What is the Community Arts Project?

We are all about the arts.  A. N. Pritzker School is a magnet cluster school specializing in the fine and performing arts and as such we have made the Community Art Project our featured annual event.  By reaching out to our community of professional and emerging artists in the vibrant Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood, we have created an unrivaled event.

Artists and community members are encouraged to showcase their talents and creativity by producing a one-of-a-kind piece conceptually linked to a theme that is chosen each year.  The final works are displayed in the shop windows of area retailers and finally showcased at the evening event held at a local artist’s studio.  This exciting fund raising event, open to everyone who purchases a ticket, features drinks, music, socializing, and a silent auction of all of the artist’s unique works.

What is a “plaything”?

A “Plaything” is a toy-like or toy inspired work of art.  So it could be something like a puzzle, set of blocks or a toy car – something you can actually play with.  Or it could static – something to be admired – like a painting of your favorite stuffed animal, or a sculpture made from 1000 Matchbox cars, or a collage made from a model airplane kit.  You get the idea – as long as it can be transported in the trunk of a car and it is a unique piece of art (no store bought toys please) we’d love to have it – so channel your inner child and let your imaginations run wild!!!!

How can I still turn in a ”Plaything”?

Please drop off at the school office or send an email to strong.hw@gmail.com to make alternate drop off arrangements.  Ideally we would like have all ”Playthings” by April 15thOh, did I mention that each “Plaything” entry will receive a free ticket to the final auction event!!!

Based on the historic “House of Cards” toy created in 1952 by Charles & Ray Eames and an urge to do something cool with the samples in our architectural library, we created these plastic laminate (P-Lam) cards that can be made into three-dimensional structures of various shapes and sizes. Rebecca is an artist originally from upstate New York. Her “Plaything” is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story, “The Ice Maiden.” The triangular origami shape is meant to represent a glacier, but it also can stand in for other natural disasters, such as a volcano, tsunami wave etc. She chose to make the Ice Maiden with red hair because she was thinking of her as Rita Hayworth in the movie Gilda (in that movie her character sings a song called "Put the blame on Mame" where a mythical person named Mame is blamed for the Chicago fire, an earthquake and a blizzard), so that reminded me of the ice maiden as a personification of the cruelty of nature represented by glaciers/avalanches.
[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_marx.jpg]Catapult I, II, III, IV, V (Stacy Marx)

This Chicago oak branch (naturally separated from the tree) is oil panted and rests in a painted lasercut basswood stand. It can be played with as long as it is returned to its throne when not being played with. Mig is a designer of performative objects and spaces at THESTUDIO14.

[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_strong-d.jpg]Build Set (David Strong)
Isn’t this the scale you always dreamed an Erector set would be? David (an architect and engineer) created this “Plaything” to inspire reoccurring building on a large scale. He challenges kids to build spaces big enough to occupy. Supplementation with sofa cushions and blankets is strongly encouraged, just be sure to avoid structural failure.
[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_strong-h.jpg]Never Go To Bed Angry (Heather Strong and Thomas Wasilowski)
You’ve heard the expression “Never Go to Bed Angry,” well these nightstands will be a constant reminder if they flank your bedside. The plexi-glass top is not affixed to the army, so use care when transporting – carrying the table and glass separately. Thomas and Heather are a pair of father-daughter architects. Heather has fond childhood memories of time spent in the woodshop and has been known to make extended visits to Pittsburgh with projects in mind.
[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_strong-s.jpg]Not Your Brothers Legos (Sadie Strong and Ashley Pacifico)
Sadie is a future 2011 Pritzker kindergartener. Her “Plaything” was inspired by her younger brother’s Legos. But, she wanted to build something non-traditional. So this teacher -student pair created something girly out of a boy-ish toy: Jewelry. They hope these bracelets, become a favorite accessory. They’re sure to start a lot of conversations. Sadie’s parents are concerned that she might be heading into the architecture field (there are already too many architects in the family- 4). Maybe Pritzker School can help with a different career choice.
[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_viamontes.jpg]Mr. Slithers (Mindy Viamontes and Kaitlin Streyle)

[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_wasilowski.jpg]Never Go To Bed Angry (Thomas Wasilowski and Heather Strong)
Thomas is a long time wood worker who has created many decorative and furniture pieces for family and friends. He is a believer in the true beauty of wood, and wants you to know that he would never use plastic or paint in one of his designs. He chalks this one up to a daughter’s bad influence. His daughter response, “Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?”
[img src=http://www.friendsofpritzker.org/wp-content/flagallery/playthings-2011/thumbs/thumbs_williams.jpg]Play House (Betsy Williams)
This miniature room is made with boxes, packaging, and catalogs from Betsy’s collection. It explores ideas about scale, perspective, flexibility, sustainability, and idealized domestic design portrayed in catalogs. No project is too small for this architect who cites the miniature Thorn Rooms at the Chicago Art Institute as a childhood inspiration. An advocate for living with less and living in less, Betsy believes beautiful and sustainable architecture can be made using ordinary materials put to careful and clever use. Someof Betsy’s slightly bigger projects have been featured in Architectural Record, Metropolitan Home, and Wood Houses. www.bewill@umich.edu
